Wrinkles Q & A
Where are the different types of wrinkles?
The main types of wrinkles are static and dynamic wrinkles. Static wrinkles can be seen even when your face is expressionless. They're the deeper folds that can occur over time due to a natural decrease in hyaluronic acid, elastin, and collagen. This kind of wrinkle is often addressed with dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid or with intense pulsed light treatments that stimulate the growth of new collagen.
The other main type of wrinkle is the dynamic wrinkle. Dynamic wrinkles are the result of forming facial expressions repeatedly over time. As the body ages, the skin becomes less elastic. Eventually, those lines that appear when frowning can permanently etch themselves into the skin. Dynamic wrinkles are often addressed with Botox® cosmetic.
How does Botox relax wrinkles?
Botox is injected into the muscles that cause wrinkles. The active ingredient in Botox, botulinum toxin type A, causes a mild paralysis of those muscles. While you can still move your facial muscles after Botox treatment, it's more difficult to keep making the frowns and other wrinkle causing facial expressions. This results in a smoothing away of existing wrinkles, and it also helps stop new wrinkles from forming.
How long does Botox last?
Botox lasts for three to four months in most patients. If you have Botox injections regularly and maintain your ideal wrinkle free appearance for some time, you might only need to have touch-ups a couple of times a year in the future.
How can you prevent wrinkles?
Good skin care can go a long way towards preserving the results you get from Botox and other cosmetic treatments. Avoid excessive sun exposure, including artificial lights like tanning beds. Use a high quality facial cleanser and moisturizer each day to help avoid new lines and wrinkles, as well. Don't forget to get plenty of hydration, too -- plain water is always best.
Can Botox be combined with other cosmetic treatments?
Yes, Botox can combine well with other treatments. For example, the XEO laser system used at Anderson Obstetrics & Gynecology can be used for vascular lesions, sun spots, sun damage, and other skin issues. If you're dealing with both wrinkles and other skin problems, we can even schedule multiple treatments during the same appointment. Schedule your appointment online or call Anderson Obstetrics & Gynecology anytime to arrange Botox treatment.
